The Zinc Oxide Varistor (ZOV)  is a nonlinear semiconductor voltage-dependent resistor that is used in electrical circuits to limit the voltage. Electronic circuits and equipment without (MOV, ZOV, VDR) can be damaged or completely destroyed by transient over voltages. They're mostly found in voltage-sensitive electrical gadgets' protection circuits. A varistor effectively bypasses all transient surge voltages and prevents them from reaching the devices' internal circuitry. A varistor is a voltage-dependent, nonlinear device that behaves similarly to back-to-back Zener diodes in terms of electrical behaviour. Zinc oxide varistors are nonlinear resistors made up mostly of zinc oxide and a variety of metal oxide additives. They are utilised for transient voltage absorption, pulse noise suppression, and circuit voltage stability and have bilateral and symmetrical V-I characteristics curves with exceptional huge peak current capabilities. The MOV's resistance varies in response to the voltage across it. The resistance lowers as the voltage across it rises, and vice versa. This characteristic is useful for preventing high voltage spikes in circuits. When the voltage is within the rated limits, the MOV's resistance is extremely high, allowing all current to flow through the circuit but not through the MOV. However, as the MOV is connected in parallel to the AC mains, a voltage spike in the main voltage appears directly across it. This high voltage reduces the MOV's resistance to a very low value, which makes it act as a short.
